World Book Day at RAL Academy was a celebration of imagination, creativity, and the joy of reading – and this year, our learners got to experience it in a truly interactive way.
The highlight of the day was our Book Bingo challenge, where students were encouraged to connect through their reading habits and experiences. Each learner received a bingo card filled with fun and relatable prompts – from “has read a book in one day” to “uses random things as bookmarks” and even “has cried because of a book.” The goal was simple: find classmates who matched each description and fill the board.
What made this activity so special was how it brought reading to life in a social and engaging way. Learners weren’t just thinking about books – they were talking about them, sharing stories, and discovering new interests among their peers. It turned reading into something interactive, personal, and fun.
Alongside the bingo challenge, the academy was filled with excitement as learners arrived dressed as their favourite book characters. From well-loved classics to modern favourites, the effort and creativity on display were incredible. The costumes added an extra layer of magic to the day, allowing students to step into the worlds of the stories they love.
At our learning centre in Durbanville, we believe that building a love for reading goes beyond the classroom. Activities like World Book Day encourage learners to explore literature in a way that feels natural and enjoyable, helping to build confidence, creativity, and communication skills.
More than anything, the day reminded us that reading is not just about schoolwork – it’s about connection, imagination, and self-expression. Seeing learners engage so enthusiastically with both the Book Bingo challenge and their favourite characters was a powerful reflection of how meaningful learning can be when it’s done differently.
